This is easily one of the best King adaptations. Shawshank is still the best but It's not far behind.

CaptainOfCrush posted...
I'm glad fans of his books are calling this a faithful adaptation. As someone who's never read King, I enjoyed it simply as its own movie. It did an amazing job holding that perfect level of suspense for over two hours (surprised it was this long), and I was most impressed a movie driven almost entirely by children could stay so gripping and powerful. Apart from Pennywise, adults had very, very little dialogue, and that turned out to be a good thing.

Regarding the length the book is an 1100 page doorstopper without much fat. It is called a horror epic for a reason! Strange in a genre known for brevity but It definitely makes this work.

Well it is fairly similar to Hannibal in that they're both horror genre blenders with beloved source material books (well, the book series in Hannibal's case...). Of course Hannibal is a sequel and fairly different to It otherwise, but I would compare It to that before Paranormal Activity 3. Although It doesn't really have any straight comparisons.

It's really good by the way. The best studio horror film since I don't even know.

I can't disagree more! Really strange to dismiss the film which is not only ending the mainstream release drought but also one of the most exceptional box office stories of the year. It now looks like it might challenge Deadpool. The previous horror record holder didn't do half that!

Incidentally I think the fact that Hannibal was the previous record holder also shows how horror films that have appeal outside the genre can perform much better. Apparently around 45% of It's presales were to non-horror fans too. That being the count that most heavily skews to genre fans.

Regarding the horror elements thing - how stringent are you? Does Jurassic Park count? Seems like a strange thing to discount given how widespread they are.

The current record holder is Hannibal with $58m, Paranormal Activity 3 if we discount that with $52.5. It should be well over $70m.

Well that came out of nowhere. Hell of a rate of increase for PUBG. I honestly wasn't aware it had had such a burst of sales. I suppose it will be up there.

Not really! it's been selling 1M-1.5M a month, every month, is the most-watched game on Twitch, and the most-played game on Steam.

Lightning Strikes posted...
Anyway, I am thinking long term for Odyssey. 15 million should be a realistic shout, if not higher.

So if Super Mario Odyssey sells 15M, it will be the only 3D Mario game to do so. The best-selling original 3D Mario game to date is Galaxy on the Wii (12.75M), although 64 is at 23M if you include both the original and remake (12M and 11M, respectively).

Lightning Strikes posted...
Of course, the Switch is going to be well well above 5 million by now anyway, and it is consistently outpacing Nintendo's estimates.

Yes, it has sold more than 5M, but the last official statement put it at 4.7M WW at the end of July. Since then it's sold 250k in Japan, so it's not that much higher, hence the 'north of 5M' statement.

Wrong on two counts. First, PUBG sold 6 million in two months. Second 4.7 million to the end of JUNE, not July, when the figures were announced. The Switch has sold well over 500k in Japan since then, and the Japanese sales have been about 20% of the total, so...

Total Switch sales are probably in the 7-7.5 million range now.

Pokemon may oust it out of the top 3 if CoD and Madden hold their spots, but I doubt Mario will, and Fifa certainly not. NBA may, though, too. But CoD fell out last year, too, so who knows.

I'd be surprised if Destiny isn't top 3 or atleast damn close, atleast.

In the US! Fifa is substantially larger than Madden worldwide. I also forgot to mention Battlefront II, which will outsell Destiny.

Also there's the Watch Dogs problem. Watch Dogs outsold Destiny's first month worldwide by almost two million yet the sequel failed. Because the first game wasn't very good. That could hurt Destiny 2. I don't think it is a guaranteed smash hit by any standard.

Yep, sounds qualified to me. It is the people who act like someone isn't because they disapprove of his performance which are amusing.

Chances on war with North Korea? 15%? Taking the higher or the lower on that number.

You realize "eligible" and "qualified" aren't the same thing, right.

Just because I'm eligible for the NFL doesn't mean I'm qualified to be on a team.

Those are the list of qualifications necessary for the job. Nothing else is required.

I suggest you separate from what you personally find acceptable for the job and what the actual qualifications are.

You are trying to be subjective with an objective matter which is clearly stated.

A lot of the countries listed would drop trade with NK to keep their trade with the US besides one major notable exception: China.

Qualified as in fit for the job, not qualified as in eligible. I wasn't aware it was an ambiguous statement.

Why would other countries kowtow to the US rather than just call this idiotic bluff? If they give in to the US on this they're basically just allowing the US to push them around. And being easily manipulated by a waning power is Trump's job...

Rhaegar's other son being named Aegon is indeed mentioned in the show. This naming makes sense though, Lyanna would not care and Rhaegar is a dick who clearly didn't care about his previous wife. Also he was obsessed with The Prince who was Promised. This actually frames one of the House of the Undying visions in the books in a different light too.

SeabassDebeste posted...
jon has always been something of a golden child for the show, and i didn't feel he'd done anything to earn it in the first two or three seasons. but by season 5, all the better characters were sidelined (tyrion, arya) or dead (robb, tywin) and jon suddenly became by far the most interesting character on the show. it was impossible to look away when jon was on screen in S5.

seasons 6 and 7 have been mostly bland for jon with isolated moments of real greatness, but he's bought himself a lot of leeway from me for his performance in S5.

This is also true for book 5 as well. Tyrion and Dany's storylines were bad, Arya, Jaime, etc. were barely in it, allowing Jon to shine. He had the best storyline in that book other than Theon.

Okay, decent overall although it does seem like 5 minutes got chopped off the end there. It also isn't really a straight adaptation, it is more a new story with that setting and characters.

The deaths were great. Almost all the characters were spot on with some really good performances. L and Ryuk were standouts. It looks nice, and has some top-tier music placement near the end (this will be divisive).

On the downside, the pacing is really weird, and Light is a totally different character. Also the aforementioned ending issue.

Overall a fun easy watch, not a classic but alright.
